Be Your Own Inspiration and Motivation

Inspiration and motivation are two really commonly used words in today’s society. Whether it’s wedding inspiration on Pinterest or #MondayMotivation on Twitter, we can’t seem to get away from this idea that other’s quotes and images are what will inspire us to action. Far too many entrepreneurs say that they’re lacking motivation or need some inspiration. Yet they’re looking in all the wrong places.

What is the difference between inspiration and motivation?

Inspiration: the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative; a sudden brilliant or timely idea.

Motivation: a reason or reasons for acting or behaving in a particular way; desire or willingness to do something; enthusiasm.

The definitions still sound kind of similar, don’t they? Think of motivation as a pulling force and inspiration as something that touches you. In business, motivation would be something like the need to pay your bills. Inspiration would be your passion to make a difference.

How to find inspiration and motivation

The example above should give you the answer to “how do I find inspiration and motivation”? Inspiration and motivation should come from within. They’re what comes naturally when you know you want something more. Not being where you want to be should be all you need to keep going and work towards getting there. The recipe for inspiration and motivation? Clearly defining what success means to you + setting those goals so you’re always being purposeful + affirmations from within: that mindset change.

How many of the quotes you see online stay with you? Perhaps a couple out of hundreds. So instead of searching for the inspiration and motivation, create your own. If you need it in the form of words, try an affirmation (like mine). If you need it in the form of visuals, create a storyboard of where you are now and the steps it’ll take to get to where you want to be.

And if you really need it from others? Try collaborating rather than reading “50 ways to get inspired” blog posts!

And if you can’t find it from within?

There are a number of reasons why your inspiration and motivation might not be coming from within. It’s not just a case of you not wanting it enough, but that the motivational pull force or inspirational touch isn’t strong enough to drive you to action. Every entrepreneur experiences this at some stage, for example – in the form of a client that isn’t “ideal” or a course that you can’t complete because the topic isn’t something you feel passionately about but the sales page was SO good, you just had to buy.

Maybe you need some work on your mindset so you can start to believe in yourself. Or you need an accountability partner like a coach to help you to transform those goals into action steps. It could even be that you’ve taken on too much and need to outsource or automate so you can focus on that inspiration and motivation. Your environment and habits may be getting in the way too, so you need to use some productivity hacks.

Hiring a business coach = find your inspiration and motivation

My inspiration and motivation is to spend more time with my twin boys and husband, whether that’s at home or when we’re travelling. It’s also now to help ambitious, determined women to create their ideal lives through freedom and success coaching.

I know the power of hiring a business coach – it was the one last shot I gave my wedding planning business before I almost gave up to go back to 80-hour weeks at my corporate job. Hiring a business coach helped me to define what success means to me and to work on my mindset so that I didn’t have to find them from within – it was there, at the forefront of my mind.

It can and will do the same for you.
